December 15

I love looking back at the end of a year to all the books I drank up, and 2019 boasted some exceptional ones.

Here’s a list—from 10 to 1—of my favorite books from this past year:

10. Wordsmithy by Douglas Wilson

9. Images and Idols by Thomas J. Terry and J. Ryan Lister

8. Notes from the Tilt-A-Whirl by N.D. Wilson

7. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

6. Death by Living by N.D. Wilson

5. The Gospel Comes with a House Key by Rosaria Butterfield

4. Every Moment Holy by Douglas McKelvey

3. On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness (and the entire Wingfeather Saga) by Andrew Peterson

2. Adorning the Dark by Andrew Peterson

1. The Bible (For the first time, I’ll have read from Genesis to Revelation in one year. It’s a winner, friends.)

What was your favorite book from 2019? Please leave a comment and let me know!

NOTE: Though most of these are either Christian or inexplicitly Christian books, please exercise discernment or, if young, talk to your parents before reading. Feel free to email me with any questions!

  1. I also love to look back on the books I’ve loved from the year. This was a great list!
I’ve heard good things about Wordsmithy and The Gospel Comes With a House Key, but I haven’t heard of some of the others. Excited to look into them!
Ahhh, yes, The Wingfeather Saga is WONDERFUL. My second favorite series ever. 🙂 I’ve also heard amazing things about Adorning the Dark, so I can’t wait to read that!
I love N.D. Wilson’s 100 Cupboards series, but I haven’t read any of his nonfiction. I’m glad to hear a favorable review! I have them on my TBR, so hopefully I’ll get to them soon!
I’m also working on reading the whole Bible, using the Discipleship Journal Reading Plan, and it has been a wonderful, beautiful read. I am so much in awe of God and his work every time I read from his Word.

    1. Thanks for reading and sharing, Amelie! I’m curious what your first favorite book series is?? Yes, N.D. became a new favorite author this year and I haven’t even read his fiction yet. That series is definitely on my TBR. That’s lovely! God has also worked in my heart this year to see his Word as more beautiful.

  2. I read 1, 2, and 4 this year, too! (And 3 and series last year ☺️)

A few of my top favorites from this year were The Innocence of Father Brown (G.K. Chesterton), The Meaning of Marriage (Timothy Keller), and the City Between series (W. R. Gringell)—her style of fantasy was a bit outside my normal genre, but I enjoyed it!

  3. Wonderful list, Bethany! I’m going to have to check them out. That’s awesome you read through the whole Bible! That’s a goal of mine’s for next year. 🙂 I’d say that my favorite books from this year, aside from the Bible is “Hind’s Feet on High Places” by Hannah Hurnard. It’s such a beautiful allegory about having a relationship with the Lord! I’m currently re-reading it since I’m on winter break.
