The Work Behind “All I Have Is Christ”

July 29

If you’ve ever heard of Sovereign Grace Music, you’re more than likely already familiar with the worship song All I Have Is Christ. Written by Jordan Kauflin in 2008, it paints a beautiful picture of the Gospel and our response to it with this simple, profound chorus:

Hallelujah! All I have is Christ.

Hallelujah! Jesus is my life.

Last week, I read an article interview with Jordan Kauflin and his dad, Bob Kauflin. As a writer with aspirations to someday pen a song, Jordan’s hard work and humility was an encouragement to me. This picture (below) especially portrays just how much adaptation and revision his lyrics endured before they reached their powerful message today.

All I Have Is Christ handwritten lyrics

Although All I Have Is Christ is now a well-known worship song, it wasn’t what Jordan initially had in mind.

“I typically tell [people] this song is yet another example of how God uses our simple labors for his glory,” Jordan said.

You can read Desiring God’s interview with him here. And, if you’re unfamiliar with this song, listen to it here. It is one of my absolute favorites.

In Christ,

Bethany J.
