A Blessing for Home

For Mike & Ashley:

May this long table be filled with friends,

Maybe not all pirates, but both the righteous and the rogue.

May they eat and party and be merry.

May this dining room ring with the laughter of a feast to come.

May this kitchen smell like coffee and bacon,

Or Fruity Pebbles and Mountain Dew.

May the plates and pots and pans be consecrated to God.

May they cook up a fragrant offering of praise.

May this porch hold a swing that’s wide enough for two,

(Or two and a Little Bear).

May the sunrise find you waiting here, looking eastward.

May the maple trees blush red every autumn.

May all these long windows let in all the golden light,

(And may you find curtains to hang instead of bedsheets).

May you lie awake to the stars beyond the windblown pines.

May you hear the pinecones drop in the silence.

May these floors bear the grit of hard work,

Even the places upstairs where they slope.

May the cockeyed doorframes remind you that life is sometimes cockeyed.

May you remember Christ is your sure crossbeam.

May paintings turn your walls into portholes,

That gaze past tossed ships to silver shores.

Beyond them, may you see a far green country under a swift sunrise,

And may your home shelter travelers who are sailing Home.

Amen.

“In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?”

~ John 14:2
