“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.”

– Hebrews 1:3 –

Wet afternoon, working at the window with tea

Sewing new bedroom curtains

Ember Falls each night

Geese honking and flying south out my window, over the trees and snow

The kids at church all excited about Papa’s pond freezing over

Mom’s cream sweater with the big buttons

Seeds in the mail

Kneading oats for crust, simmering blueberries for filling

Hauling bundled kids across the snow

Red faces and runny noses

Carving sled paths

Papa and Mema smiling in the window

Fire in the woodstove

Lacing up skates, stepping onto the ice

Pond hockey– racing, scraping, shoving, winding up and shooting

Sun falling behind the cedars, splaying the ice with warm light

Grabbing up skates and walking home through the gate for dinnertime

Baked sweet potato with honey

A Place On Earth by Wendell Berry

Lying by the fire till bed

Shoveling, snow hitting my face, thinking about Mom’s chicken with potatoes at home

Framing the lilac Gia pressed for me

This unbelievably happy Instagram account, documenting the lives of an elderly English couple

Tying back the curtains to see a band of sun over snow

Drifts on the eaves, swept down in whirlwinds

Wednesday night volleyball games

Hudson trying skates, kicking too hard

Jasmine the puppy, licking Elsie’s cheeks

Last day on the ice with friends until dark fell

Celebrating Becca’s birthday with lunch and jeopardy and long conversations about MBTI types (complete with Mallory’s whiteboard explanation)

Friendly village dishes and sugar cookies with leaves pressed into them

This conversation about heaven with Jim Paul, Andrew Peterson, and Mary McCambell

My new hammock

Sun erasing the snow, a shift in the wind, spring in the sky

Pine groves

Six-mile hike

Heavy, warm sleep before waking to a new day, year, age

Twenty years of Jesus’ faithfulness and sameness toward an unfaithful and fickle me

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” – Heb. 13:8

  1. Bethany, I always look forward to your TTMMH posts. Their poetic simplicity creates a sort of stillness within me. I find myself looking back over my own month, realizing that it was a very good month, after all. Thank you.

  2. Oh wow. You make me wish there was snow on these Georgia mountains — though our jonquils are beautiful, too.

Thank you for taking the time to reflect; I hope your new year is filled with even greater beauty and wonder.
