“Why, God?”
I know I’m not the only Christian who has clenched my fists and asked that question. I’m guessing the Israelites asked it too.
And do you know what? God’s answer is as clear as today’s autumn sky.
I’m reading across the psalms and prophets right now and noticing this repeated truth:
God does what he does for his name’s sake. Every action, every word, every punishment, every blessing is given so we will know he is Lord.
The inhabited cities will be destroyed, and the land will become dreadful. Then you will know that I am the LORD (Ezek. 12:20).
Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, to make his power known (Ps. 106:8).
This is what the LORD God says: It is not for your sake that I will act, house of Israel, but for my holy name… I will honor the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations… The nations will know that I am the LORD… (Ezek. 36:22-23a).
God’s fame and glory always answer our “why” question. That’s massively encouraging, isn’t it?
All Scriptures are from the Christian Standard Bible.
