Gardening in God’s Kingdom

February 3

I’ve had spring fever since November. I do love snow and Christmas and skating on my grandpa’s pond. But I also can’t wait for spring sunshine and planting garden seeds.

A passage in 1 Corinthians reminded me last week that Christians are called to tend a garden year-round. A spiritual garden. Like the Apostle Paul and Apollos, we’re called to plant and cultivate in the soil of God’s kingdom.

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth (1 Cor. 3:6-7).

Productive evangelism and discipleship often require teamwork. Paul was a sower. Apollos was a cultivator. Together, they fertilized the soil of God’s kingdom. Not only did  their roles complement one another, but they recognized their limitations.

Only God can make people grow.

You might be a missionally-driven seed planter. I might be a church-integrated soul nourisher. God is the Gardener. Together, we can be a powerful growth catalyst for the plants in God’s kingdom.

In Jesus,

Bethany J.

  1. I was in the middle of watching a video about gardening when I saw this. I thought it was interesting timing. 🙂
